Same-Sex Marriage Becomes the Law of the Land

TOWARDS FULL EQUALITY: TRANSGENDER IDENTITY
IN NORTHEAST OHIO* » CLEVELAND – Feb. 24th at 12PM
President Obama made history in his 2015 State of the Union speech when he used the word “transgender,” while announcing protections for LGBT individuals. Though the country has made great strides to promote and secure justice for the LGBT community, the “T,” which stands for “transgender,” is often left out of the conversation.
Connie Schultz, Pulitzer-Prize winning columnist, will moderate a panel discussion about the challenges of being transgender and current efforts to address discrimination.

UUA President’s June 25 Statement on DOMA/Prop 8
Equality Ohio Lobby Day
Lobby Day will be May 8 with a focus on the Equal Employment and Housing Act. There is renewed interest in both the Senate and the House. We will be working hard to pass this legislation in 2013. Our legislators need to hear from us and be educated on our issues. Our stories change hearts and minds.
On May 16, 2012 UUs joined with others from Equality Ohio for Lobby Day with regional teams representing 7 distinct regions of the state. Last year, a version of the Comprehensive Safe Schools Act was adopted. Unfortunately, it did not include enumeration and thus fell short of expectations.
In a separate campaign, Freedom Ohio has been collecting signatures to place a Marriage Equality proposal on the November ballot.
The Human Rights Campaign Ohio has local urban chapters and a site with resources.
The UU Council of Greater Cincinnati is organizing The Pride Interfaith Worship Service on Thursday June 27 at First Unitarian in Avondale this year. The Pride Parade and Pride festival will be on Saturday June 29. We will be marching in the parade with a float and also have a UU booth. A sea of yellow shirts would be awesome. Finally at 6 pm on the 29th a mass “Commitment and Recommitment” service is planned at the main stage at Pride and we have been asked to help staff the reception for that. Questions? contact MJ Pierson.
